Speaker Series | The History of Fishing in Ponce Inlet, Florida

Come learn about the history of fishing in Ponce Inlet. From the Timucuan Indians to the modern day fleet and conservation efforts, Chad Macfie will share the stories and pictures from the families, fishermen and locals who created the backbone of Ponce Inlet as we know it today.

Chad Macfie grew up in South Daytona where his passion for identifying and studying marine life began the first time his father took him fishing. Chad started his career at the Florida Museum of Natural History where he worked in the fish collection and as a shark fisheries biologist under wellknown ichthyologists Carter Gilbert, George Burgess, and Rob Robins. Since joining the Marine Science Center in 2005, Chad has worked as the Aquarium and Life Support Systems Manager, Special Projects Coordinator, and Manager. Chad helps Volusia County’s Artificial Reef Program by training divers and students how to identify invertebrates and fishes in support of its monitoring program. He believes environmental education plays an important role in conserving habitats and protecting the plants and animals that make up the foundations of the food chain.
